Ogden • Weber State will retire the jersey of former quarterback Jamie Martin at its home finale against Northern Colorado on Nov. 15.

Martin was a two-time All-American. He won the Walter Payton Award in 1991 as the outstanding player in what was then known as Division 1-AA. He played 16 years in the NFL.

Martin will be the first Weber State athlete in any sport to have their jersey retired.

"This is such a great honor," Martin said. "... When I look back on my time at Weber State, I feel very grateful for the opportunity to play college football at such a beautiful place, with so many great players."

In the NFL, Martin played for seven teams — St. Louis, Washington, Jacksonville, Cleveland, New Orleans, San Francisco and New York Jets. He threw for almost 4,000 yards and 20 touchdowns in his pro career. He was with the Rams in 2001, when they reached the Super Bowl.

"We are very thrilled for the opportunity to honor Jamie Martin," said Weber State athletic director Jerry Bovee. "He was a terrific player and did so much for the university and the football program. ... He is very deserving of this honor."
