San Jose, Calif. • The San Jose Police Department has informed its officers they are no longer allowed to do off-duty work for the San Francisco 49ers.

The order Friday came hours after the San Jose Mercury News reported a sergeant with the San Jose Police Department allegedly was at Ray McDonald's house the day he was arrested for domestic violence.

The officer is one of 16 from the department who moonlight with the 49ers as part of the team's security.

San Jose Police Chief Larry Esquivel says in a message to personnel that it is in the department's "best interest to suspend all San Francisco 49er secondary employment related assignments until further notice."

Esquivel says the decision was made "due to the complexities of the investigation."

McDonald is out on $25,000 bail following his Aug. 31 arrest.

49ers • The 49ers signed WR Kassim Osgood to a one-year deal. To make room on the roster, the team has released QB Josh Johnson. Osgoods been released and resigned three times this year. . Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said CB Perrish Cox has blossomed this season. "He's got good instincts as a corner. This is his first opportunity, at least with us, to have extended action as a corner. He's taken full advantage of it." Boldin has six career 100-yard games against the Rams, his most against any team.

Bears • Seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs of the Chicago Bears has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Atlanta due to a rib injury.

Coach Marc Trestman said Friday there was no indication Briggs had broken ribs but was too sore. Briggs hasn't practiced all week.

Briggs' replacement at weakside linebacker would be either Jonathan Bostic, second-year linebacker Khaseem Greene or rookie Christian Jones. Bostic was questionable for Sunday's game with a back injury and also hasn't practiced this week.

Bills • Buffalo Bills starting offensive guard Chris Williams and backup receiver Marcus Easley have been ruled out from playing against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Williams, with a back injury, and Easley (left leg) will both miss their third straight games.

Running back Fred Jackson is listed as questionable because of a sore right ankle. Jackson also missed practice Friday because of the flu.

Starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams is listed as questionable. Williams has practiced all week and may return after missing one game due to a right knee injury.

Starting linebackers Nigel Bradham (left knee) and Brandon Spikes (ribs) and starting safety Aaron Williams (wrist and neck) practiced Friday but are listed as questionable

Broncos • Rookie Juwan Thompson gave a big boost to the Broncos' thin running back rotation by participating in all of Friday's final tuneup for the New York Jets.

Coach John Fox says Thompson had a good week of practice, and "we're counting on him for the game."

The undrafted rookie from Duke hurt his knee Sunday against Arizona. He missed Wednesday's workout and was limited Thursday.

With starter Montee Ball sidelined by a groin injury, Ronnie Hillman got most of the snaps with the starters and is to make his first NFL start Sunday. Thompson and C.J. Anderson will divvy up the rest of the carries. —
