Ogden • Coming off a well-timed bye, Weber State seeks its first win under coach Jay Hill on Saturday, when the Wildcats face Cal Poly at Stewart Stadium.

Weber State is 0-5 after a deflating 31-28 loss to rival Southern Utah two weeks ago. The Wildcats committed four turnovers in the game, including a goal-line interception in the final seconds that sealed their fate.

According to Hill, last week's down-time has helped Weber recover physically and emotionally from a taxing start to the season.

"It was good to have the bye week," Hill said. "We were starting to get pretty banged up at certain positions."

The bye also gave the Wildcats extra time to prepare for Cal Poly's unique option attack, which ranks fifth in the Big Sky in scoring (29.4) and total offense (460.4).

"It's a different animal we're facing this week," Hill said. "... We have to be physical, especially up front. The front has to take away the dive and everybody else has to be sound."

Said Cal Poly coach Tim Walsh, "We're running the ball pretty well right now. We're clicking on all cylinders. ... That has allowed up to be a little more multiple."

The Mustangs attempted 17 passes in last week's 42-39 win over Southern Utah. They had thrown only 52 times in their first four games.

Weber State and Cal Poly have fought different demons so far.

The Wildcats been plagued by turnovers — "The wins will come if we quit turning the ball over," Hill said — while the Mustangs are second in the Big Sky in penalties. They were flagged 10 times the victory over SUU.

Walsh knows Cal Poly must clean up the penalties against Weber State.

"Looking at them a year ago and looking at them now, they are a much-improved team," he said. "... They are well on their way to becoming a good team."
