Defending champions Lone Peak and Timpview are expected to be in the mix Monday and Tuesday when the Class 5A and 4A boys' state golf tournaments are contested at two different sites.

Lone Peak edged Viewmont a year ago for the state 5A title. It is expected to be challenged by Syracuse and Weber for the 5A state title, which will be contested at Glen Eagle in Syracuse.

Cameron Webb, who finished in a tie for second for individual honors, will be back for Lone Peak. Teammate Carson Lundell, Syracuse's Chandler Thomas, Weber's Braydon Swapp and Viewmont's Boston Watts could also challenge for the 5A medalist honors.

Timpview edged Bonneville a year ago for the 4A title and is among the favorites to win that title at Riverbend in Riverton. Expect East and last year's runner-up, Orem, to challenge for the state championship.

Individually, Maple Mountain's Kai Ruiz, a second-place finisher, looks to be strong, as does Corner Canyon's Rhett Rasmussen. Orem's Brock Stanger, East's Hayden Banz, Bonneville's Ryder Velasquez and Timpanogos' Aaron Yeates all could be in the mix.

The Class 3A and 2A golf tournaments will be held Wednesday and Thursday in St. George.

Park City, led by defending individual champion Mitchell Schow, will be the 3A favorite with that tournament being held at Sunbrook. Expect St. George area schools Desert Hills and Pine View to challenge.

Other top 3A individuals to watch are Taylor Cummings of Desert Hills and Tooele's Jerzee Houston.

Manti will defend its 2A title at Southgate. The Templars are led by Joe Barton and Koby Quarnberg. Expect Grand County and South Sevier to give Manti a challenge for the team title.

Individuals to watch in 2A include Delta's Brandon Hare and Beaver's Davis Heslington.

Bingham loses chance at record

Bingham lost a chance to tie a school football record for shutouts Thursday when it allowed Alta a field goal in a 35-3 victory. The Miners went into the contest with three straight shutouts and were trying to tie a record four straight set in 1946.

Great start for Taylorsville

After Friday night's 31-6 victory over Hillcrest, Taylorsville's football team is 6-1 for the first time in school history. The Warriors move into the Class 5A rankings this week.

Volleyball, soccer players honored

MaxPreps, in conjunction with two national coaching associations, have honored two Utah athletes with player of the week awards.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association named Pleasant Grove's Jeniel Briggs as one of its players of the week. She has 81 assists, 12 digs and three blocks in leading the Vikings to a 16-6 overall record and a 6-0 league mark thus far this season.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America gave a smilar honor to Allissa Anderson of American Leadership Academy. Anderson has 28 points and 14 goals this season.

Directors Cup winners

The Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association has awarded its "Directors Cup" to Bingham, Springville, Desert Hills, Manti and Panguitch for the 2013-2014 athletic season.

According to the group's executive director Marc Hunter, the organization representing athletic directors at Utah high schools awards the cup to one school in each of the five classifications.

Criteria include 40 percent on state tournament success for boys' and girls' sports; 40 percent based on the ranking of each team's grade point average, and 20 percent on the successful implementation of the Utah High School Activities Association's Raise the Bar sportsmship program.

Bingham led 5A followed by Riverton, Brighton, Copper Hills and Jordan. Springville was the top 4A school followed by Sky View, Maple Mountain, Box Elder and Timpanogos. In 3A, Desert Hills led Park City, Snow Canyon, Payson and Morgan. Manti was the top 2A school followed by Rowland Hall, Delta, Grand County and Gunnison.
