Provo • Senior Jennifer Hamson was the Cougar to watch in No. 11 BYU's three-set takedown of the Portland Pilots (25-16, 25-22, 25-21) in Saturday's Smith Fieldhouse showdown.

Hamson finished with a team-high 15 kills.

"We had too many random errors tonight," BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. "But you learn from it, take the win and get ready for the next match."

Setter Camry Godfrey Willardson had 31 assists, four kills and seven digs. Alexa Gray added 12 kills of her own and Ciara Parker led the team with 11 digs.

Amy Boswell and Whitney Young each added a team-high four blocks in the win.

SUU earns a second

Women's volleyball • SUU women claimed another conference win against Portland State at home in four sets — 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22.

The Thunderbirds stand 2-0 for the first time since 2009. Remo Gaogao smashed 14 kills, joined by Ann Clapier and Madi Forsythe's with 12 each.

SUU claims major invitational victory

Men's cross-country • Southern Utah placed first out of 31 teams — including nationally ranked North Carolina, Iowa State, Colorado State and Texas — at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis.

Nate Jewkes earned individual honors in the division one race, finishing in 24:45 on the 8K course.

Mike Tate finished 14th with a time of 25:20.

BYU beats SMU on the road

Women's soccer • Ashley Hatch and Elena Medeiros combined to score three goals in the second half of BYU's victory against SMU in Texas on Saturday.

The Cougars (6-3-2) won their fifth consecutive game, dropping the Mustangs to 5-6-0.
