Sacramento • Weber State will see a familiar face Saturday night, when the Wildcats seek their first win of the season at Sacramento State.

The Hornets are coached by Jody Sears who, for the last two years, guided Weber State.

"This game is not about me," Sears says. "It's about two Big Sky Conference opponents getting after each other. ... It will be fun."

In April of 2012, Sears was hired as Weber State's defensive coordinator. Three weeks later, however, he was named head coach when John J. Smith abruptly resigned.

Weber went 4-19 under Sears, who was fired after last season.

In January, Sears was hired as the defensive coordinator at Sacramento State. But in April, head coach Marshall Sperbeck suddenly resigned and, once again, Sears was asked to take over a shell-shocked program.

Under Sears, Sacramento State is 1-1, including a win over Incarnate Word (49-13) and a loss at Cal (55-14).

Meanwhile, Weber State is 0-2 under new coach Jay Hill. The Wildcats come off a 24-7 loss to top-ranked North Dakota State last week.

"It's been fun to see those guys on film," Sears said. "They are a lot better — a lot more physical — and they are obviously well-coached."

While Sears downplays his presence as a factor in the game, Hill disagrees.

"Our players will want to win because coach Sears was here," he said, "and I guarantee you coach Sears wants to win because he was here."

According to Hill, Weber State must clean up some critical mistakes it made against North Dakota State.

"We had to our-discipline them, which we did not do," he said. "We had three very costly personal foul penalties. ... We did not match their discipline. We have to do better."

Although the Weber-Sacramento State game matches Big Sky teams, it won't count in the conference standings because of the league's unbalanced schedule. —
