Kaysville • What do three fumble recoveries and two pass interceptions get a team?
In the case of Davis, the answer is a 17-10 victory over previously unbeaten Syracuse Thursday night in a Region One opener that could go a long ways in determining who claims the title at the end of the year.
Parker Christiansen threw two first-half touchdown passes and Chase Clampitt added a 35-yard third quarter field goal to give the Dart defense all it needed before a big home crowd on a beautiful fall evening.
"It's huge," said Christiansen, who threw a 3-yard scoring pass to Hayden Chisholm and a 35-yard scoring bomb to Griffin Hill. "Region is always tough. Every team comes out to play and always give us their A game. We're happy to come out and execute the way we did. The defense played amazing and came through in the clutch."
Davis coach Tyler Gladwell offered similar sentiments.
"A region win is always a great win," he said.
"It doesn't matter how it comes or where it comes from. So we're excited."
He had praise for a Dart defense that stymied a good Syracuse offense for all but one series late in the fourth quarter that kept the outcome in doubt.
"We were fortunate enough to get some turnovers and it helped us out tremendously," said Gladwell, whose team has won three straight since losing its opener to top-ranked Bingham.
"Turnovers win or lose ball games."
Davis seemed to be sailing along to an easy win as it led 17-3, giving up only a 41-yard field goal to the Titans' Romney Harker right before halftime.
When Clampitt hit his 35-yard field goal, this one looked like it was over.
But someone forgot to tell Syracuse.
The Titans' Kole Tracy hit Dax Harris on an eight-yard touchdown pass with 4:30 to go to make it a 17-10 game.
Davis managed to get a pair of first downs before being forced to kick with 1:17 to play. But the punt was a beauty, pinning Syracuse back on its own seven.
Appropriately, the Darts' Connor Taylor ended all doubt with an interception, giving Davis its fifth turnover of the night, its third straight win and, perhaps most important, a win against a strong league rival.
