Marcus Mariota threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair to speedy redshirt freshman Devon Allen, and the No. 3 Oregon Ducks' blur offense prevailed over No. 7 Michigan State's stout defense 46-27 on Saturday night.
Mariota's three touchdown passes in what was considered a premier nonconference matchup gave him 69 for his career, an Oregon record.
After falling behind 27-18 early in the third quarter in Eugene, Oregon scored four unanswered touchdowns, including on a pair of runs by freshman Royce Freeman.
The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the defending Big Ten and Rose Bowl champion Spartans, who went 13-1 last season. Connor Cook threw for 343 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Spartans had the second-ranked total defense in the nation last year, allowing opponents an average of just over 252 yards per game. But the high-flying Oregon offense combined with temperatures approaching 100 degrees appeared to wear on Michigan State as the game went on.
USC 13, Stanford 10 • New Southern California coach Steve Sarkisian smiled, pumped his fist and threw his arms in the air as his players jumped around the sideline at Stanford Stadium.
All of the emotions that had been lacking for USC the past few years finally came pouring out on the road, against a rival and in front of a national television audience sometimes even a bit too much. Few things looked pretty for the Trojans on Saturday except for the final score:
USC 13, Stanford 10.
Andre Heidari kicked a career-long 53-yard field goal with 2:30 remaining, J.R. Tavai forced a fumble to end the Cardinal's comeback bid and the 14th-ranked Trojans upended No. 13 Stanford in dramatic fashion.
Arizona St. 58, New Mexico 23 • Taylor Kelly threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and D.J. Foster rushed for a career-high 216 yards on Saturday night as No. 17 Arizona State beat New Mexico 58-23 in Albuquerque.
The Sun Devils (2-0) grabbed a 22-0 first-quarter lead behind rushing touchdowns from Deantre Lewis, Kelly and Kalen Ballage.
The Lobos (0-2) pulled within 29-21 with 4:49 left in the second quarter, but Arizona State scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and New Mexico's only two points in the second half came on a blocked extra point that Brandon Branch returned 98 yards.
Cal 55, Sacramento State 14 • In Berkeley, Calif., Jared Goff matched his career high of four touchdown passes, backup Luke Rubenzer threw for one and ran for another, and California beat Sacramento State 55-14 on Saturday.
Kenny Lawler caught two touchdown passes form Goff including a leaping one-handed grab while Maurice Harris and Darius Powe also scored on touchdown receptions. Goff went 17 of 22 for 229 yards.
