Santa Clara, Calif. • Early in his career, Jonathan Martin had a harder time keeping plays straight while shifting from one side of the offensive line to the other.

That ability and versatility now might help earn him a job with the San Francisco 49ers after what coach Jim Harbaugh considers an impressive first training camp with the team.

Martin feels fit and well adapted in the offense and his new surroundings, having moved past a three-week bout with mononucleosis this spring and his tumultuous departure from the Miami Dolphins last fall amid a bullying scandal.

For now, Martin is concerning himself with all that he can control to earn a spot on the 53-man roster when final cuts are complete Aug. 30. He has started both preseason games at right tackle in place of starter Anthony Davis and also played snaps on the left side.

• In other team news, the 49ers re-sodded their field at the new $1.2 billion Levi's Stadium from goal line to goal line and sideline to sideline with longer grass Friday and they expect no problems for Sunday's preseason game against the San Diego Chargers.

49ers Chief Operating Officer Al Guido says the team, league officials and other experts and consultants are working to determine why the initial sod laid in April failed to hold up at least well into the regular season as was expected. There had been plans to re-sod at some point this season when it was deemed necessary.

Browns • A person familiar with the penalty says Cleveland's rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel was fined $12,000 on Friday by the NFL for flipping his middle finger at Washington's sideline.

Manziel said he was reacting to taunting by Washington during Monday night's nationally televised game. The action didn't help his chances to win Cleveland's starting job, which went to veteran Brian Hoyer. Manziel says he has to be "smarter" on the field.

Browns coach Mike Pettine was "extremely disappointed" by Manziel's conduct and said the 21-year-old's on-field behavior factored into the team's decision in naming a starter.

Broncos • Jordan Norwood's season-ending knee injury jumbled the Denvers' search for Trindon Holliday's replacement on punt returns and dented the team's depth at wide receiver.

The replacement could be undrafted rookie Isaiah Burse, who was listed behind Wes Welker and Norwood on the first depth chart of the preseason.

Given his concussion history, Welker was expected to field punts whenever Denver was backed up deep or the game was close with Norwood taking the field whenever there was a chance to have a big return.

With Welker missing two days of joint practices with the Houston Texans this week for personal reasons, there's a strong possibility Burse will get a long look Saturday night when the teams face each other in a preseason game. —
