Soccer • Miroslav Klose, the top scorer in World Cup history, has retired from Germany's national squad a month after the team won the title for the fourth time.
The 36-year-old scored two goals in Brazil, making him the highest-scoring player in the tournament's history with 16, one ahead of Brazil's Ronaldo. With a career total of 71 goals, Klose is also the highest-scoring player for Germany. He is also the second most capped Germany player with 137 games.
"The title in Brazil fulfilled a childhood dream of mine," Klose said in a statement posted on the German national team's website Monday.
• Didier Drogba's decision to retire from international soccer has caught the Ivory Coast federation by surprise.
The federation wants to talk to the 36-year-old striker before giving its "official position" on the end of his career.
Drogba announced his decision Friday after 12 years with his national team, eight as captain. Drogba has played in all three of Ivory Coast's World Cup appearances.
• A November trial has been set for U.S. women's goalkeeper Hope Solo, who is accused of assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew in June.
Solo, who also plays with the Seattle Reign of the National Women's Soccer League, appeared in court in Kirkland, Washington, on Monday.
Oden charged with battery of girlfriend
NBA • Prosecutors in Indiana have formally charged former NBA No. 1 draft pick Greg Oden with battery for allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend in the face during a fight.
The free-agent center was charged Monday with felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury, misdemeanor domestic battery and misdemeanor battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
The 26-year-old was arrested at his mother's suburban home in Lawrence, Indiana, on Thursday and released later that day from jail. An affidavit says a witness told police Oden had punched the woman in the face, drawing blood.
Keys tops Cornet in Ohio's first round
Tennis • Madison Keys accomplished something Serena Williams couldn't — beating Alize Cornet.
Keys pulled off a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cornet in the first round of the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio, on Monday.
Cornet, who upset the top-ranked Williams in the third round at Wimbledon six weeks ago, was playing with an injured left leg that she said started bothering her during her second-round loss to Victoria Azarenka last Tuesday at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
