Soccer: U.S. women, Mexico to play Rio Tinto friendly
Rio Tinto Stadium will once again play host to two international rivals.
The U.S. women’s national team and Mexico will face off in an international friendly on Saturday, Sept. 13, in a two-game series between the two rivals that serves as final send offs prior to the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship. The U.S. hosts the 2014 tournament along with Kansas City, Chicago, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia.
The CONCACAF tournament’s top three finishers automatically qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. The fourth-place team enters a two-game playoff against a South American national team looking to qualify. The friendly between the U.S. and Mexico will be the third time the USWNT will play at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy. The Americans have a 2-0-0 record there, having topped Mexico 1-0 in March 2010 and Canada 2-1 in June 2012.
The Sept. 13 match between the U.S. and Mexico is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m.
