Provo • The Cougars will start the season without the services of the receiver they were hoping would step in and replace Cody Hoffman.
After BYU's 13-series scrimmage on Saturday morning, head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced that junior college transfer Nick Kurtz has a stress fracture in his left foot and will be out 6-8 weeks.
Kurtz watched the scrimmage with a walking boot on his left foot.
"Luckily, we have depth at receiver at this point," Mendenhall said. "But Nick Kurtz was doing a really nice job."
Kurtz is a 6-foot-6 junior from Grossmont (Calif.) College and one of the marquee members of BYU's 2014 signing class.
Mendenhall said the offense "won the day" against the defense in the scrimmage, but not by much. The offense scored three touchdowns, missed a field goal, punted eight times and threw an interception in the 13 series at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Quarterback Taysom Hill threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Juergens. Backup QB Christian Stewart threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Devon Blackmon, and running back Adam Hine scored the third touchdown on an 8-yard run.
