Golf: BYU’s Lea Garner leads Women’s State Amateur
Ogden • BYU golfer Lea Garner’s eagle-birdie finish carried her to a 5-under-par 67 and a six-shot lead Wednesday after the first round of stroke-play qualifying in the Women’s State Amateur at the Ogden Golf & Country Club.
Garner, a junior from nearby Washington Terrace, eagled the par-4 No. 17 and birdied the par-3 No. 18. She’s six strokes ahead of Allison Cluff. Last week, Garner won the Utah Golf Association’s inaugural Women’s Stroke Play Championship at Hill Air Force Base.
After Thursday’s round, the top 15 players will join two-time defending champion Kelsey Chugg in match play. Twenty golfers shot 79 or better Wednesday.
Sadie Palmer stands third at 74, followed by Sirene Blair, Kimberly Nyhus, Madi Rooker and Emily Podlesny at 75; Brooklyn Anderson and Kendra Dalton at 76; Annie Yang and Carly Oldroyd at 77; Sue Nyhus, Xena Motes and Kristie Jensen at 78; and Justine Connell, Julie McMullin, Annette Gaiotti, Haley Dunn, Karen Killpack and Tara Green at 79.
