A recent hire by the Utah High School Activities Association means that there will be a new head football coach roaming the sidelines at Davis High School this fall.
The UHSAA hired long-time Utah high school football coach Ryan Bishop as an assistant director. He replaces Kevin Dustin, who was hired as the athletic director at Salt Lake Community College. Bishop's duties will include being the director of baseball, basketball, football, golf and theatre while also overseeing coaches' education and sponsorships.
Rulon Homer, director of high schools for the Davis School District, said Wednesday that former Bonneville head coach Tyler Gladwell has been named interim coach for the Darts this season and that the district will look to find a permanent replacement after the season is over. Gladwell had served as offensive coordinator at Davis under Bishop.
The Darts are expected to be one of the better teams in Class 4A this season.
Bishop, whose father Jack was a long-time Utah football coach, served 16 years as a head football coach. He spent his first three years at Bear River High School before moving to Davis in 2001. His 2004 team won the 5A title.
"Davis High School afforded me wonderful opportunities," Bishop said in a news release issued by UHSAA. "I am so thankful for the relationships I have there."
In addition to his football duties at Davis, Bishop was also the dean of the school's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math students, acting as the school representative for student activities and working with school counselors to ensure the school's NCAA clearing house status.
He also served as the Utah Football Coaches Association President from 2010 to 2012 and was named National Federation of High Schools Western States Coach of the Year in 2011. Bishop is a graduate of Southern Utah University.
"Ryan's energy, enthusiasm, excitement and experience have qualified him for this position," said UHSAA executive director Rob Cuff. "He has prepared himself throughout his career for this opportunity to share his leadership and passion for education-based activities with our students, officials and administrators."
