Holt wins honors at State Am

Ogden • Jake Holt figured it wouldn’t take him long to rediscover his golfing groove after hernia surgery a month ago sidelined him for more than three weeks.

Just the same, the Tooele native acknowledged he is surprised that he has quickly gotten back to the form that made him a two-time all-conference golfer at Southern Utah University the last few years.

Holt cruised to medalist honors at the 116th Utah State Amateur on Tuesday, carding a smooth 2-under-par 68 at Ogden Golf & Country Club after bolting into the lead with a 64 on Monday up the road at Layton’s par-72 Valley View Golf Course.

"Medalist is nice to have, but ultimately I want to win the match play," Holt said. "It is nice to win [medalist] but now it is a whole new tournament."

As usual after the second and final round of stroke play at the State Am, the real drama came long after Holt finished, as a playoff was held for the last 10 match-play berths.

Twelve golfers who shot 5-over-par 145 played off for the last 10 berths.

On the first playoff hole, 16-year-old Joshua Lillywhite hit his approach shot over the rock wall behind the green and onto 40th Street and finished with a triple bogey to be the first player eliminated.

Bubba Hall, John Lindsay, Brock Stanger, Dylan Chugg, Nick Griego, Cannon Randall and Mark Mortensen made pars on the next playoff hole, No. 11 at Ogden G&CC, to survive and make match play, while Andrew Cottle, Wyatt Burton, Bob Mitchell and Jesse Clark moved on to another hole.

On the par-5 12th hole, Cottle and Mitchell made birdies and Clark rolled in a short putt for par. Burton was the last man eliminated after his approach shot hit a cart path and bounced out of bounds. He saved bogey at 9:06 p.m. after the sun had dropped below the Great Salt Lake, but the country club member’s tournament was over. Tommy Higham, a rising junior at BYU who is from Shelley, Idaho, and former Cougar golfer Devon Purser, who now plays for Weber State, tied for second in the stroke-play qualifying portion of the tournament at 134. With his dad, Jerry, on his bag, Higham fired the second-best round of the day at Ogden G&CC, a 66. John Owen shot a 65.

"I am really comfortable here and I like the layout," said Higham, who played six rounds for Idaho in the Junior America’s Cup at Ogden G&CC back in 2007.

Purser, who is from nearby Syracuse, made a short birdie putt on his final hole Tuesday to move into the tie for second. The lanky, long-hitting junior at Weber State is familiar with the country club, having played here dozens of times this past spring with his fellow Wildcats.

"I haven’t had the best record in the State Am, so for me it is just, ‘show up and see who you play and then play some golf.’ It can go either way [in match play.]," Purser said.

Knowing he didn’t have to match Monday’s 8-under tour of Valley View, Holt purposefully played conservatively Tuesday, by his own admission, to protect the lead. The strategy worked, as he played a bogey-free round and threw in a couple birdies on holes 6 and 17 en route to the 68 at Ogden, which has been turned into a par-70 track for the tournament.

"Basically, I just followed the same process [as Monday]," Holt said. "I took it one shot at a time, and whatever happened, happened."
