New York • Deron Williams had surgery Tuesday on both ankles and the Brooklyn Nets say their point guard should be ready for the start of training camp.

Williams had arthroscopic surgery to remove spurs from the front and back of his left ankle. Also, a loose bone fragment was removed from his right ankle.

Williams is expected to be on crutches for four to six weeks before rehabilitation, the Nets said in a statement. He will start light court activities in August and begin full basketball activities in September.

The former All-Star has been plagued by ankle trouble for the past two seasons and missed 18 games in 2013-14, including 16 because of a sprained left ankle. He averaged 14.3 points and 6.1 assists.

Pacers' George fined $25K for comments

New York • The NBA fined Indiana Pacers forward Paul George $25,000 on Tuesday for his public criticism of the officiating in the Eastern Conference finals Game 4 loss to Miami.

Rod Thorn, the league's president of basketball operations, said George made his comments in the postgame news conference following the 102-90 loss to the Heat on Monday night.

Miami was 30 of 34 from the foul line in the game. Indiana was 11 of 17.

George said his team couldn't overcome a "20-point differential" that came through foul calls. He said Miami won the game at the free-throw line.

Sterling says forced termination is illegal

Los Angeles •Donald Sterling responded formally to the NBA's attempt to terminate his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday, saying it was illegal to oust him based on a "lover's quarrel" that was "illegally recorded."

Sterling's response, obtained by the Los Angeles Times, included a cover letter that contended he had received offers "in excess of $2.5 billion" to purchase the franchise he's owned since 1981. The potential buyers weren't named.

Sterling said that his inflammatory remarks about blacks were made in a private conversation with V. Stiviano.

The response goes on to claim Sterling was "distraught" when he made the statements because Stiviano told him she planned to bring "four gorgeous black guys to the game" and that should be a mitigating factor.

"This was an argument between a jealous man and the woman he loved that should never have left the privacy of the living room," the response said.
