Washington State scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and defeat the Utah baseball team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Pullman, Wash.
Utah starter Dalton Carroll was strong over 72⁄3 innings of work, matching up with WSU's Tanner Chleborad. Carroll struck out six, allowing one run on five hits with no walks.
T.J. Bennett went 3-for-4 to lead the Utes at the plate.
Washington State's Patrick McGrath led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and eventually scored on Michael Monda's two-out single.
Utah (15-30, 4-20) left two runners on in the second inning, and also left a pair on in the fourth after Max Schuman and Bennett hit singles to start the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Utah's Bennett singled and Konnor Armijo reached on an error to put two on with one out before a double play ended the game.
Utah will host BYU at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Smith's Ballpark.
Softball
Utah Valley, which won the WAC softball tournament as the No. 4 seed, will represent the conference in the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines (18-40) will face host Oregon (49-7-1) on Friday in the Eugene Regional.
