auto racing • IndyCar will stage one of its open-wheel races in the New Orleans area in 2015, people familiar with the decision said Sunday.
The race will come to the 2.75-mile road course at the private NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale, about 14 miles southwest of downtown New Orleans, the people said. Officials plan to announce the race Monday. The $60 million facility was designed by Alan Wilson, who also designed Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele.
WIlliams, Sharapova win; Djokovic out
tennis • Serena Williams brushed aside Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-2, 6-1 to open her defense of the Madrid Open title on Sunday, while Maria Sharapova beat Klara Koukalova 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.
In the men’s tournament, Novak Djokovic withdrew before the start of the event because of a right wrist injury.
Froome winsTour of Ramandie
cycling • Chris Froome won the final-stage time trial of the Tour of Romandie in Neuchatel, Switzerland, to take the overall victory in the Tour de France warm-up race.
The British rider defended his Romandie title and aims to become the fourth straight winner at the six-day Swiss race to win cycling’s signature event in July. Froome started Sunday’s 11.5-mile stage trailing leader Simon Spilak by one second but finished in 24 minutes, 51 seconds to beat the Slovakian by 29 seconds.
Atletico Madrid suffers setback
SOCCER • Atletico Madrid stumbled in its drive for what would be its first Spanish league title since 1996 when it lost 2-0 at Levante. Real Madrid needed a spectacular injury-time equalizer from Cristiano Ronaldo to salvage a 2-2 draw at home against Valencia. Atletico (28-4-4) has 88 points with two games left, three points ahead of defending champion Barcelona (27-5-4). Real Madrid (26-4-5) has 83 points with three games left.
