The University of Arizona softball team beat Utah 11-7 on Saturday night in Tucson, Ariz., overcoming a stellar performance by Ute freshman shortstop Anissa Urtez.
Urtez hit a two-run double and a two-run homer, but Utah (23-23, 5-14 Pac-12) came up short against the No. 9 Wildcats (38-9, 11-7), who had a 16-5 advantage on hits.
Utah reliever Mariah Ramirez (4-5) took the loss, giving up five earned runs on 11 hits in 4 innings.
New Mexico 20, Utah State 3 • In Albuquerque, N.M., Paxton Provost had an RBI single to help Utah State take a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lobos bounced back to dominate the Mountain West game. USU starter Franny Vaaulu (0-3) took the loss, giving up 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits over three innings.
Utah State fell to 18-28 overall and 6-11 in the MW.
Men's golf
In Tucson, Ariz., Utah State's Reed Platke matched his career low with a 2-under 69 in the second round of the Mountain West championship, finishing the day in a tie for 10th place at 2-over 144 at the Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort.
Utah State shot a 295 in the second round to move into a seventh-place tie with Wyoming at 25-over 593.
New Mexico (139) led the team standings, with two Lobos — Gavin Green and Victor Perez — tied with San Diego State's Riccardo Michelini for the individual lead at 3-under 139.
• In Angels Camp, Calif., Southern Utah posted a 302 and remained in fourth place after the second day of the American Sky Golf Championships at Greenhorn Creek Golf Club. Southern Utah's Tim Leonard (5-over-par 149) shot a 75 and remained in sixth place in the individual standings, while Jake Holt (150) shot 71 to move from 16th to eighth place.
Track and field
Utah State's Sam Nielson won the women's triple jump at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif., with a mark of 12.26 meters as the Aggies won the women's team title
The Utah State women (132) topped California (122) and New Mexico (97.5) in the team standings.
The Utah State men's 400-meter relay team broke the tape in 40.17 seconds to finish first and help USU (120) finish second in the men's team standings behind California (161).
