Provo • The Los Angeles Sparks had to wait until the second round to make their first pick in Monday night’s WNBA Draft.

The team recently bought by an ownership group led by former NBA superstar Magic Johnson will have to wait a lot longer to get Jennifer Hamson in a Sparks uniform.

The Sparks, who went 24-10 last season with a star-heavy squad, selected the 6-foot-7 BYU senior with the 11th pick of the second round, the 23rd pick overall.

Before the draft, Hamson said she will not play professional basketball this summer because she intends to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Volleyball Team camp in June and then return to Provo for her final season of eligibility with the BYU women’s volleyball team in the fall.

The Pleasant Grove High product is an All-American in both sports, and led the Cougars to the NCAA Volleyball Sweet 16 in 2012 before redshirting the 2013 season so she could concentrate fully on basketball.

"I have made it known to the WNBA that [playing volleyball this summer and fall] is definitely what I am going to do," Hamson told The Salt Lake Tribune last week.

Hamson said when the volleyball season ends in December she will get an agent and focus on one sport. Monday, the Sparks took a big step toward ensuring that sport will be basketball.

The club will own the rights to Hamson for a year.
