State colleges: Utah baseball team beats USC 3-2 in 13 innings

TJ Bennett led off the 13th inning with a single and scored on Konnor Armijo’s two-out base hit as the University of Utah baseball team defeated USC 3-2 in a Pac-12 game on Friday in Los Angeles.

Cory Hunt had an RBI triple in the fourth inning for the Utes (11-19, 2-10), who had just four hits while the Trojans had eight.

Utah starter Mitch Watrous held USC to two runs on four hits over eight innings, and Nick Green pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win.

Pepperdine 6, BYU 4 • In Malibu, Calif., Kelton Caldwell and Bret Lopez had three hits each for the Cougars, but the first-place Waves hit two home runs en route to the West Coast Conference victory.

BYU pitcher Kolton Mahoney (4-5) took the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits over 42⁄3 innings.

Men’s volleyball

UC Santa Barbara 3, BYU 1 • In Santa Barbara, Calif., Taylor Sander led the Cougars with 15 kills, but they lost the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match 25-21, 15-25, 25-22, 28-26. Josue Rivera added 10 kills for the Cougars.

Softball

Arizona State 4, Utah 3 • In Tempe, Ariz., Marissa Mendenhall went 2-for-4 for the Utes in the loss.

BYU 3, Santa Clara 2 • In Provo, McKenna Bull earned the win for the Cougars, striking out seven batters while holding Santa Clara to one run on six hits over 51⁄3 innings.

Women’s tennis

Utah State 5, Colorado State 2 • In Fort Collins, Colo., USU’s McKenzie Davis defeated Adriana Wojakowska 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match as the Aggies notched their school-record 13th win of the season, and their first Mountain West victory.
