Moraga, Calif. • BYU split a doubleheader with Saint Mary's in West Coast Conference baseball Friday, winning the first game 4-3 before dropping the second 6-1.

In Game 1, Kolton Mahoney allowed one run while striking out six in seven innings to earn his third victory of the season.

Brock Whitney went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double that put the Cougars (10-19, 2-7) ahead for good.

In Game 2, the Gaels (13-13, 4-1) broke a close game open with a four-run seventh inning.

"It's frustrating, but I am proud of the way we came out and played today," BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. "We made adjustments at the plate and were much-improved, but Neff was lights out and didn't give us many pitches to hit."

Cal State Bakersfield 10, Utah Valley 4 • In Orem, the Wolverines lost the first game of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Brent Brown Ballpark.

Bakersfield (11-13, 4-3) led 4-0 after four innings. Colby Croft was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Wolverines (7-18, 1-3).

Softball

Idaho State 6, BYU 4 • The Bengals scores two runs in the top of the seventh inning to win in Provo.

Sydney Broderick, Katie Manuma and Carly Duckworth each hit a home run for the Cougars (11-19), who host a doubleheader against Idaho State on Saturday.

Fresno State 6, Utah State 0 • In Fresno, Calif., Bulldogs pitcher Jill Compton threw a three-hitter against the Aggies (13-15, 3-1 Mountain West).

Men's volleyball

BYU 3, UC Santa Barbara 2 • In Provo, Taylor Sander smashed a match-high 27 kills to lead the No. 2-ranked Cougars to a 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-13 victory.

Matt Underwood had 11 kills for BYU, which has won five straight.
