Toronto • England star Jermain Defoe scored his third MLS goal in two games to lift Toronto FC to a 1-0 win over D.C. United in Toronto's home opener Saturday.
Defoe scored twice in his MLS debut last week in Seattle and could have had four goals on the day before he finally scored in the 60th minute after Brazilian strike partner Gilberto was sent in alone by a beautiful through ball from U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley.
Goalie Bill Hamid made the save but the ball was cleared only as far as Defoe, who got the ball out from under his feet and hammered home a right-footed shot.
The goal featured all three of TFC's designated players and helped Toronto to its best ever start to a season.
Crew 2, Union 1 • In Columbus, Ohio, Bernardo Anor scored first-half goals from close range with his head and from afar with his left foot and Columbus held on to defeat Philadelphia in the Crew's home opener. Columbus won the first two games of the season for the first time in its 19-year history.
Rapids 2, Timber 0 • In Commerce City, Colo., Vicente Sanchez and Deshorn Brown scored on penalty kicks two minutes apart in the second half.
Sanchez scored his second penalty kick in as many games in the 73rd minute and Brown got his in the 75th for Colorado.
Portland has never beaten the Rapids in Colorado, going 0-3-1 in their road games with Colorado.
FC Dallas 3, Chivas USA 1 • In Frisco, Texas, Je-Vaughn Watson and Michel scored in a 15-minute span of the second half to keep FC Dallas unbeaten.
Castillo opened the scoring in the 71st minute off a Mauro Diaz set piece, and Watson outran defender Tony Lochhead on a long ball and then juked goalkeeper Ian Kennedy for the eventual game-winner.
