State colleges: Utah women’s basketball defeats Arizona 52-47

Michelle Plouffe scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the University of Utah women’s basketball team to a 52-47 victory over Arizona on Friday night in Tucson, Ariz.

Emily Potter scored 12 points and Cheyenne Wilson added 10 for the Utes (11-15, 4-11 Pac-12), who trailed 25-20 at halftime but went on a 22-8 run to take command in the second half. The Wildcats fell to 5-21, 1-14.

TCU 10, BYU 0 • The Cougars (1-6) struck out nine times in seven innings, and the Horned Frogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as BYU lost at the Kleberg Bank Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Michigan State 8, Utah 5 • TJ Bennett drove in three runs for the Utes (2-3) in their opening game of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge in Surprise, Ariz.

SLCC 4, Western Nevada College 3 • Caleb Summerhays went 2-for-4 with a two-run double as Salt Lake Community College (7-6) won at the Scenic West Athletic Conference preseason tournament in Henderson, Nev.


BYU • The Cougars (6-8) split two games at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., falling to Oklahoma State 6-5 in eight innings and defeating Fordham 5-2. Ashley Thompson went 4-for-7 with a home run and five RBIs against OSU, then struck out six from the mound against the Rams.

SUU • Kylee Wolff homered in each game, but Southern Utah (1-10) suffered two losses at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, falling to Nevada 6-4 and Grand Canyon 9-4.


Utah • Chloe Fausa won the women’s giant slalom to lead the Utes to five podium finishes on the first day of the RMISA and NCAA West Regional in Beaver Creek and Minturn, Colo. Utah stands in second place with 334 points, just three behind Colorado.


SUU 195.500, BYU 193.375 • The Thunderbirds turned in big performances on bars and beam, which was enough to edge the Cougars in Provo.

Denver 195.875, Utah State 194.650 • USU’s Bailey McIntire won the floor exercise with a 9.9 in Logan.
