MLB • David Ortiz wants a one-year contract extension with the Red Sox through 2015 and would like to have that situation resolved pretty soon. Boston's designated hitter is in the final season of a $26 million, two-year contract. Ortiz says he would like to get the issue out of the way so it doesn't become a distraction. Team owner John Henry says it's conceivable that a resolution could be reached soon. He says he doesn't know when the sides will come to an agreement, but says he wants Ortiz to finish his career with the Red Sox. Ortiz's agent, Fernando Cuza, has been at the Red Sox camp in Fort Myers, Fla., and Henry says it's good to talk with him about Ortiz's future at the start of spring training.
• Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey agreed to a $105 million, six-year deal Wednesday that avoids arbitration and will help the Reds' cash flow by deferring some of the salary. Bailey was the final major league player left in arbitration this year and reached the agreement a day before his scheduled hearing. The 27-year-old Texan was coming off a season that included his second no-hitter.
• Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez and the Baltimore Orioles have finalized a $50 million, four-year contract. Jimenez, 30, who is to be introduced at a Thursday news conference, is 82-75 with a 3.92 ERA in eight seasons with Colorado and Cleveland.
