Michelle Plouffe made a layup with 2.4 seconds left in the game to give the University of Utah women's basketball team a 59-57 victory over Washington State on Sunday in Pullman, Wash.
Plouffe finished with 17 points, and teammate Emily Potter also scored 17 and grabbed 10 rebounds as well for the Utes (8-9, 1-5 Pac-12), who outscored the Cougars (11-7, 5-1) 15-6 to close the game.
"We showed some resiliency and toughness today," Plouffe said. "We made plays when it mattered, when it counted. We got the 'W' and now we have to move on from it. We have a lot of things to work on, but that's a good thing."
Utah next plays No. 19 Arizona at 7 p.m. Friday at the Huntsman Center.
Men's basketball
Utah Valley 52, Seattle 51 • Mitch Bruneel scored 20 points, including the game-winning free throw, to lift the Wolverines at Seattle.
In a close game that included nine lead changes and margins that never exceeded five points, Utah Valley (10-7, 4-0 Western Athletic Conference) fell behind after leading much of the second half before Bruneel was sent to the penalty line, where his first bucket tied the game at 51 and his second put the Wolverines back on top with just 2 seconds left.
Ben Aird and Holton Hunsaker contributed 11 points each for Utah Valley.
Seattle (9-9, 1-4) took the lead twice in the final 4 minutes but couldn't protect it.
