Cedar City • Former BYU head coach Gary Crowton is the new offensive coordinator at Southern Utah.
SUU coach Ed Lamb confirmed Sunday he has hired Crowton, who guided the Cougars from 2001-04. In four seasons at BYU, his teams compiled a record of 26-23, including 12-2 in his first year.
"I'm thrilled Gary has agreed to join us," said Lamb, who worked for Crowton at BYU in 2001.
"Having Gary here is not only tremendous for our players but for our coaches, too. We are all going to benefit from his experience."
Most recently, the 56-year-old Crowton was the offensive coordinator of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League. He was fired in August.
Previously, Crowton has also been an offensive coordinator at Oregon, LSU and Maryland, as well as with the NFL's Chicago Bears.
Southern Utah athletic director Ken Beazer announced the hiring of Crowton with a Twitter post Saturday night. It read, "We welcome Gary Crowton as the newest member of the SUU football coaching staff."
According to Lamb, Crowton is latest of four new assistants.
The others are offensive line coach Ken Miller, running back coach Sam Lutui and linebacker coach Rob Takeno, who was a graduate assistant at Utah State last season.
The reshuffling at Southern Utah started after Lamb received a contract extension through the 2020 season.
Within two weeks, new Weber State coach Jay Hill hired three Thunderbird assistants. The group included director of offense/quarterbacks coach Steve Clark, defensive coordinator Justin Ena and passing game coordinator/running backs coach Fesi Sitaki.
