The BYU women’s track team won five events at the Lobo Collegiate Invitational on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
BYU’s Deezbaa Whaley won the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 18.62 meters. Angela Shields won the 400 meters in 57.29 seconds, and Allysa Hansen won the 600 meters in 1 minute, 34.23 seconds.
In her first race for the Cougars, freshman Shea Martinez (2:09.29) won the 800 meters. Rachel Fisher won the pole vault with a mark of 4 meters (13 feet, 2 inches).
The Utah women’s tennis team kicked off its season by notching three singles victories and four doubles victories in Charlottesville, Va., at the University of Virginia’s Winter Invitational. Utah’s Anastasia Putilina beat Virginia’s Emily Fraser 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the A Singles bracket.
Arizona State 18, Utah Valley 16 • In Tempe, Ariz., UVU’s Derek Thomas and Adam Fager won the final two matches of the day, but the Wolverines’ comeback bid came up short. Thomas beat ASU’s Luke Bean 3-1 with a late takedown in the 197-pound match, and Fager beat Chace Eskam 8-2 at 285 pounds.
