The Portland men's basketball team cruised past Southern Utah 86-57 on Sunday in Portland, Ore., handing the Thunderbirds their fourth straight loss.
Thomas van der Mars scored 17 points, and Alec Wintering had a career-high 10 assists for Portland.
After missing his first two shots, van der Mars hit four in a row as Portland (5-3) jumped to a 16-5 lead and never trailed. Van der Mars made a layup to start the second half, and did not take a shot from the field the rest of the way. He went 5 of 8 from the line in the second half to cap his scoring.
Trey Kennedy scored 12 points and Juwan Major added 10 to lead SUU (1-4).
Women's basketball
San Diego 75, Weber St. 55 • In San Diego, Regina Okoye led Weber State with 21 points in the loss to undefeated San Diego (7-0), which is off to its best start in school history. Des Ramos added 15 points for the Wildcats (3-3).
