Speedskater Heather Richardson finished fourth in a women's 500-meter World Cup race in Kazakhstan on Friday, highlighting the U.S. Speedskating efforts on the first day of the three-day event.

Richardson clocked 37.76 seconds, behind winner Sang-Hwa Lee of South Korea, who set the world record of 36.36 in a race at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns earlier this month. American Brittany Bowe finished in a tie for ninth in 38.03 seconds.

Two-time Olympic champion Shani Davis finished a surprisingly distant fifth in the men's 1,500, clocking 1:45.92 behind winner Denis Yuskov of Russia in 1:45.06. Davis is the world-record holder in the event. —
