Salt Lake City’s Daniella Dryden won her novice ladies division at the Pacific Coast Sectional Figure Skating Championships in Oakland over the weekend, earning a berth along with six other Utahns to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships next year.
Orem’s Hina Ueno finished fourth behind Dryden to earn her second trip to nationals — the top four skaters in each of five skill divisions qualified — while Salt Lake City’s Justin Ly finished fourth in the novice men’s division to also make it for the second time.
The championships run Jan. 5-12 in Boston.
Kendrick Weston and Aurelia Perkins, both of Salt Lake City, each finished second in their division to qualify for a second time, Weston in the intermediate men and Perkins in the juvenile girls.
All of those skaters represent the Salt Lake Figure Skating Club, along with Nathan Chen and Angela Wang, who earned byes into the nationals in the junior and senior divisions, respectively, and skipped the sectionals to prepare for the Junior Grand Prix final Dec. 5-8 in Japan.
The 14-year-old Chen recently won Junior Grand Prix events in Belarus and Mexico, and the 17-year-old Wang was second in a Junior Grand Prix event in Poland and fifth in one in the Czech Republic. Chen lives and trains in California now, while Wang trains in Colorado.
