State colleges: Pepperdine blows past UVU men late for 58-53 win
In Malibu, Calif., the Utah Valley men's basketball team (2-3) led Pepperdine on the road with less than four minutes to play, but the Waves (4-1) went on a late run and hit 8-of-8 free throws down the stretch to win 58-53 on Saturday night.
Zach Nelson led the Wolverines with 13 points, Enos Keawe added 12 and Ben Aird scored 10. The Wolverines hit only 31.7 percent from the field, but forced 15 turnovers to stay close. Utah Valley also outscored Pepperdine 14-0 off turnovers.
Dixie State 78, Western Oregon 74 • In Monmouth, Ore., the Red Storm improved to 4-0 behind a game-high 23 points from Dalton Groskreutz. Zach Robbins had a game-high 15 rebounds and 12 points for Dixie State, and DeQuan Thompson and Louis Garrett added 12 each.
UC Riverside 74, Southern Utah 59 • The Highlanders turned a close one at halftime into a rout by scoring 13 of the first 15 points in the second half.
BYU 82, Cal State Northridge 66 • In Northridge, Calif., the Cougars moved to 4-0 thanks to Jennifer Hamson's big night. The 6-foot-7 senior had 24 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in just 19 minutes of play. Lexi Eaton had 16 points and seven rebounds for BYU.
SUU 68, Westminster 65 • The Thunderbirds (4-1) held off a late rally by the Griffins (4-1) after leading by double digits most of the night Saturday in Cedar City. Hailey Mandelko led SUU with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Amy Krommenhoek led Westminster with 17 points; Alli Winters added 16.
San Diego 3, BYU 2 • In San Diego, the No. 9 Toreros (24-3, 16-2 WCC) edged the No. 21 Cougars in five sets (27-25, 15-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11) to win the West Coast Conference championship.
Sophomore Alexa Gray had 20 kills and Kathryn LeCheminant had a team-high nine blocks for BYU ((22-6, 15-3 WCC), which now hopes to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will be shown on ESPNU on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. MST.
San Diego State 3, Utah State 0 • In San Diego, the Aztecs (15-13, 10-8 Mountain West) swept the Aggies (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) to gain ground in the conference standings. Rachel Orr had 14 kills to lead Utah State (18-11, 11-7).
Eastern Washington 3, Weber State 1 • The Wildcats finished their season with a tough four-set home loss (27-25, 25-22, 22-25, 26-15) on Saturday night in Ogden. Samantha Staker led Weber State with 40 assists, and Audrey Biggs had 12 kills.
North Dakota 3, Southern Utah 0 • In Grand Forks, N.D., mascot-less North Dakota (22-10, 17-3 Big Sky) maintained its perch atop the conference standings heading into next weekend's conference tournament with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-12 sweep. The Thunderbirds (4-27, 3-17) finish their season in last place in the Big Sky.
