Nathan Chen, Angela Wang and Camille Davis lead a contingent of 13 young figure skaters from Utah who will compete at the Pacific Coast Sectional Figure Skating Championships this week, with a shot at reaching nationals.
The championships run Tuesday through Saturday in Oakland, Calif.
The top four skaters in each skill division — senior, junior, novice, intermediate and juvenile — will qualify to compete at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Jan. 5-12 in Boston.
Chen and Wang, both of Salt Lake City, each received a bye into the sectionals in the junior and senior divisions, respectively, while Davis, a Springville native, qualified in the senior division by finishing third at a regional competition last month.
The 14-year-old Chen recently won Junior Grand Prix events in Belarus and Mexico, and is among the favorites to win his division, while the 17-year-old Wang was second in a Junior Grand Prix event in Poland and fifth in one in the Czech Republic.
Chen lives and trains in California now, while Wang trains in Colorado, but both represent the Salt Lake Figure Skating Club, along with eight of the others.
Five skaters from Utah will compete in the novice division, with Daniella Dryden (Salt Lake City), Rachel Crawford (Ogden) and Hina Ueno (Orem) having swept the women's podium spots at regionals and Justin Ly (Salt Lake City) and Mitchell Friess (Layton) having finished first and second in the men's competition there.
Kendrick Weston (Salt Lake City) and Amalia Friess (Layton) will compete in the intermediate division at sectionals, while Anna Sophia Rorrer-Warren (Bountiful) and Aurelia Perkins (Salt Lake City) will compete in the juvenile division.
