Provo — Tyler Haws scored 28 points and Matt Carlino added 22 Friday night, leading BYU to a season-opening 81-72 victory over Weber State at the Marriott Center.

The Cougars never trailed in the game. Nor were they able to put away the Wildcats, who were led by Kyle Tresnak with 24 points and Davion Berry with 23.

BYU owned a 44-33 lead at halftime before Weber State got as close as 46-40.

The Cougars countered with a 15-1 run to make it 61-41 with 12:57 remaining, but the Wildcats rallied again.

Davion Berry scored on a floater from the baseline and hit consecutive three-point shots within a 66-second span to make it 61-49.

Over the next three minutes, however, BYU countered with seven straight points Weber State went scoreless as the Cougars regained control.
