Sports briefs: Velasquez remains UFC heavyweight champ

MMA • Cain Velasquez stopped Junior Dos Santos in the fifth round Saturday night at UFC 166 in Houston to retain the heavyweight title.

Dos Santos came out firing to start the final round, but Velasquez (13-1) worked him down to the mat only to have Dos Santos (16-3) get back up against the Octagon walls. The two traded lefts before Velasquez landed a left and took Dos Santos down head-first to the mat, causing the bout to be halted.

Iconic Bum Phillips dies at 90

NFL • Bum Phillips, the folksy Texas football icon who coached the Houston Oilers during their Luv Ya Blue heyday and later led the New Orleans Saints, died Friday. He was 90.

"Bum is gone to Heaven," son Wade Phillips tweeted Friday night. "Loved and will be missed by all — great Dad, Coach, and Christian." Phillips died at his ranch in Goliad..

Stosur makes Moscow final

TENNIS • Samantha Stosur beat doubles partner Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday in Moscow and will face Simona Halep of Romania in the Kremlin Cup final. Stosur will play for her second title in two weeks. In the men's semifinals, top-seeded Richard Gasquet defeated Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7-4, 7-5, while qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan upset defending champion Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

• Robin Haase, a Dutchman ranked No. 63, upset top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 7-6 (4) on Saturday to set up a final against Tommy Haas at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. The second-seeded Haas, of Germany, rallied past Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (0).

• Top-seeded David Ferrer became the first Spaniard in 37 years to reach the Stockholm Open final when he beat fifth-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday. In Sunday's title match, Ferrer will play seventh-seeded Grigor Dimotrov of Bulgaria, who defeated wild card Benoit Paire of France 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
