Printed in block letters in blue ink on Skyline goalkeeper Hillary Weixler's arm is a simple, motivating message: to the end.

All of her teammates share the same temporary tattoo as a reminder during the Class 4A state tournament that everything is left on the field.

Thursday's match against Clearfield was no different.

Skyline held on for a 1-0 victory in a state quarterfinal marked by physical play and key defensive stops. Weixler said the match tested not only the Eagles' ability to score but to finish what they started at the beginning of the season.

"We need to play to the end and endure to the end," Weixler said. "I believe in myself and my team because we are all focused on doing what we need to do."

Skyline needed to maintain possession and push the ball against a fast Clearfield squad. With Jaslyn Masina, Cate Christensen and Zoe Moses recklessly throwing themselves into the air for control while creating wide passing lanes, Skyline stifled Clearfield's scoring chances.

"A game like this means so much more when it is against a team as good as Clearfield," Masina said. "We were able to get good spacing and attack throughout the game."

The lone score occurred in the 20th minute when Masina drove hard toward the goal from the top of the box. Her shot was deflected by Clearfield's McKenna Sill, but sophomore Bella Sorensen followed through for the goal.

"It was a really competitive game," Sorensen said. "I'm really happy that I was able to tap it in."

Clearfield challenged throughout the match, but Weixler earned her 10th shutout on the season. Each of Weixler's 11 saves resulted in booming kicks to restart the Eagles' offense. Masina said that having Weixler between the posts gives her the confidence to play aggressive on the other end of the field.

"She makes the big plays and keeps us in every game," Masina said. "We wouldn't be here without her." Class 4A state tournament
