Kaysville • Colton Chronister let a pass fly on his very first snap on his first drive.

Interception. 0 for 1. Ouch.

No sweat, he thought.

"I've been a quarterback all my life, and you have to have a short memory," he said. "I knew it wasn't in my character, and I just had to come back and get it the next time."

The Davis senior quarterback didn't just do better the next time, he shined for the rest of the game in a four-touchdown performance while leading the Darts (8-0, 5-0) to a 36-24 victory over the visiting Layton Lancers (4-5, 3-2) in a surprise shootout Wednesday night.

The yet-unbeaten Darts have made their mark with suffocating defense this season, not allowing more than 14 points in any game. But the Lancers' tough running game, led by a 224-yard effort by scrappy back Davis Marriott, put Davis' scoring to the test.

Chronister helped the Darts ace it, throwing for 275 yards on an efficient 14-for-18 night. Davis frustrated Layton with bubble screens and short tosses toward the sidelines to keep moving the chains.

"That was all scouted out," Chronister said. "We wanted to take advantage of our speed on the edges. It's the easiest pass to throw, and my receivers just took it downfield."

A key 15-point swing near the end of the second quarter gave the Darts the upper hand. After Chronister capped a 75-yard drive with a touchdown dive, a muffed kickoff return by Layton again set up the Darts for a short touchdown drive.

Chronister naturally ran it in.

Although Davis got its lead to a game-high 19 points right out of the half thanks to a 95-yard touchdown reception by Abel Porter, the Lancers answered the score with a touchdown run by Marriott. The teams traded touchdowns once more in the fourth quarter before the Darts forced a turnover on downs with two minutes remaining then ran out the clock.

The Lancers managed to score a second-quarter touchdown by taking advantage of a Davis muffed punt. They recovered the ball at the Darts' 29, Marriott ran the ball to the goal line before reaching the end zone on a 2-yard dive to give Layton its only lead of the game at 10-7.

Parker Rose scored Davis' other rushing touchdown, the first score of the game.
