Provo • Wednesday night’s non-region game against Lone Peak had absolutely no baring on Timpview’s chances of making the playoffs.
The T’Birds already have qualified for postseason play, so win or lose, this game didn’t matter.
They all matter to Timpview quarterback Britain Covey.
Covey threw two touchdown passes and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to help the Thunderbirds to a convincing 29-6 win over Lone Peak.
"It’s a rivalry, but it definitely had a different feel to it," Covey said. "Real players want to compete whoever it’s against, and for us, this was a good chance to show where we’re at as a team by playing a very good Lone Peak team."
While Timpview’s spot in the playoffs has been secured, Lone Peak’s has not. The Knights weren’t willing to risk an injury to starting quarterback Baron Gajkowski, so they opted to sit him.
Timpview’s defense seized the opportunity and would have secured a shutout had it not been for Matt Criddle, who accounted for Lone Peak’s only points. After Covey scored on an 8-yard run, Criddle took the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown that cut the lead to 15-6 with 6 minutes, 4 seconds left in the third quarter.
All Criddle’s big play seemed to do was fire up Covey because he promptly engineered a scoring drive. He threw a 30-yard pass to Mitchell Stephens that moved the ball to the Lone Peak 5. Then Covey found running back Kendall Tu’ua for a touchdown pass that put the game out of reach.
Covey added a 10-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter that put another round in the cannon that Timpview fires off with each score.
Timpview improved to 7-1, while Lone Peak fell to 4-4. Both teams return to region play next week. The Thunderbirds can clinch the Region 7 title with a win over Wasatch.
Lone Peak plays at Westlake next week. The Knights are a game out of first place and a game and a half out of last place, so their final two games are critical.
