Prep girls' soccer: Dunn sparks Davis' victory over Northridge
Layton • Ireland Dunn knew the message in the huddle before kickoff against host Northridge was simple: get the intensity up and keep it there.
Dunn's Davis Darts didn't disappoint Tuesday.
Dunn scored twice in Davis' 3-1 victory over Region 1 girls' soccer rival Northridge. She commanded her offense by applying pressure from the opening kickoff to the closing whistle.
"At this point in the season, every game matters," Dunn said. "There is no second chances. We have to play as a team, remain focused and execute."
Dunn struck first in the 12th minute on a cross from sophomore Regyn Youngberg. Youngberg threaded the ball between three defenders, and the streaking Dunn managed to outmaneuver the goalkeeper.
"Regyn was perfect in that cross," Dunn said. "I was able to push it to the far corner when the goalie fumbled her position."
Davis struck again in the 20th minute when Abbey Mann delivered on a penalty kick. Mann smoothly struck the ball to the right shelf to double her team's advantage.
"That's where I always go," Mann said. "There was no doubt I was going to get that one in."
Dunn scored her second goal in the 37th minute when an errant corner kick found her at the top of the box.
She uncorked a shot dead center, and the ball crushed through a sea of white jerseys to find the back of the net.
Davis keeper Sara Beecher recorded four stops and allowed only one goal by Northridge's Jessica Ellis in the 34th minute.
"She played so great today," Mann said about Beecher. "We know she has our back when she's out there."
The Darts' success came from constantly pushing the ball forward and using shorter passing lanes in the thick grass. They communicated effectively, contested every ball and kept the ball out of their zone.
"They were a tough team," Dunn said. "It's always good to win one of these."
