Chelsey Schofield posted 17 kills and nine digs, and the Utah women's volleyball team picked up its program-record ninth consecutive victory to start a season, defeating Idaho State 25-12, 23-25, 25-8, 25-21 on Saturday, at the Wolverine Classic in Orem.

Later Saturday, the Utes (10-0) extended their record start by defeating Utah Valley 25-19, 25-21, 27-29, 25-15. Bailey Bateman and Erin Redd-Brandon paced Utah in the nightcap with 12 kills each.

"These tournaments are a grind," Utah coach Beth Launiere said. "You just have to be willing to grind it out, and that's what we did. Every team is good, and Utah Valey was on its home court, so we just had to deal with everything that was thrown at us.."

UC Irvine def. UVU 25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 25-15 • The Wolverines lost their first tournament game Saturday despite 12 kills from Macky Treanor. After losing to Utah, UVU fell to 2-8.

Arkansas-Little Rock def. SUU 17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 7-15 • Taylor Heine and Kylie Schofield each posted 14 kills to lead Southern Utah (1-8) in a nonconference loss in Las Cruces, N.M.

Utah State def. Liberty 25-11, 25-11, 25-23 • The Aggies (6-4) finished with a .463 attack percentage in their last match of the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. Elle Brainard led USU with 15 kills.

Weber State • The Wildcats (4-7) split two matches in their frist day at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Penn Invitational. Weber defeated La Salle 26-24, 25-18, 25-15 and lost to Temple 25-14, 25-11, 23-25, 25-19.

SLCC • Salt Lake Community College (12-4) picked up a pair of victories at the Pizza Hut Invitational in Sterling, Colo., defeating Casper College 25-15, 25-18, 25-23 and Northeastern Junior Colege 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-16.

Women's soccer

UC Irvine 1, BYU 0 • Natalia Ledezma scored in the 89th minute as the Cougars (4-1-1) lost a heartbreaker at home.

Cross country

BYU • The Cougar women won its Autumn Classic in Provo with 37 points, edging Portland by two points. Andrea Nelson Harrison and Nicole Nielsen took fifth and sixth, respectively, to lead BYU. The Cougar men also won their meet, with Tylor Thatcher winning the individual race with a 4-mile time of 19 minutes, 54.1 seconds.

Weber State • Both the Wildcat men's and women's teams took third place at BYU's Autumn Classic. Summer Harper was Weber's top women's finisher, taking third in 18:14 over 5 kilometers.

SUU • The Thunderbird men took second place of 23 teams at the UC Riverside Invitational. Ryan Barrus took second place overall with an 8K time of 24:08.8, followed by teammate Dylan Marx in third in 24:13.7. The SUU women took fourth of 16 teams.
