State colleges: Utah wins twice Saturday to stay unbeaten in women's volleyball

Denton, Texas • The Utah women's volleyball team won the North Texas Invitational on Saturday, finishing the tournament 4-0 with a sweep over Northwestern State.

The Utes are 7-0, which is tied for the best start in program history.

Makenzie Moea'i and Bailey Bateman each smashed 11 kills for the Utes against Northwestern State.

"This was a good tournament for us," Utah coach Beth Launiere said. "We faced quality teams yesterday and followed that up with, more importantly, a high level of play today. We got better with the organization of our offense and defense and just kept executing at a high level."

BYU • The 25th-ranked Cougars beat Fresno State 27-25, 25-13, 25-16, but lost to Oklahoma, 22-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12 at the Portland State Tournament.

Tambre Haddock tallied 11 kills and 10 digs against Fresno State. Haddock had a game-high 24 kills and Alexa Gray had 22 for BYU (4-3) against Oklahoma.

Utah State • The Aggies rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Pacific 16-25, 11-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-11 behind 20 kills from Rachel Orr at the University of Portland Invitational.

Utah State's (3-2) game against co-host Portland late Saturday night was in progress at press time.

Weber State • The Wildcats lost twice Saturday at the Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno, Nev.

Weber State lost to Nevada, 25-22, 31-29, 25-20 and UC Davis 25-17, 25-15, 25-21. Audrey Biggs had team-high kills against Nevada (10) and UD Davis (eight).

The Wildcats (3-5) have lost five straight matches.

Utah Valley • The Wolverines lost in straight to both Butler (25-11, 25-22, 25-16) and Arizona (25-17, 25-22, 25-15) at the Arizona Desert Classic in Tucson.

Nakisha Willden hit a game-high 14 kills against Butler for Utah Valley (2-5).

Southern Utah • Kylie Schofield smashed a game-high 22 kills to help the Thunderbirds (1-5) win their first game of the season against Nebraska-Omaha (14-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11).

Westminster • The Griffins finished 1-1 on Saturday to finish second at the Julie Martin Memorial Classic in Livonia, Mich.

Mayra Ramirez hit .533 for nine kills in Westminster's 25-22, 25-20, 25-18 win over Illinois Tech in Game 1.

Westminster (6-7) lost in straight sets — 25-7, 25-16, 25-20 — to tournament championship and 11th-ranked Madonna (13-0).

SLCC • The sixth-ranked Griffins won twice Saturday at the Hilex-Poly Invitational in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Carol Grasso had 19 kills in the Bruins win (26-24, 22-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-10) over No. 13 Miami-Dade College.

Janessa Koelliker hit .750 for nine kills in SLCC's win (25-16, 25-15, 25-20) over No. 11 Hutchinson Commnity College.

The Bruines are 8-4.

Women's soccer

Utah State 3, Idaho State 2 • In Pocatello, Taryn Rose scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute to help the Aggies (5-0) remain unbeaten this season.

Houston Baptist 1, Utah Valley 0 • In Missoula, Mont., the Wolverines outshot their opponent 19-12, but couldn't get a goal to fall to 1-4.

Dixie State 0, Montana-State Billings 0 • The Red Storm earned a tie at home in their first game of the season.
