The New York Jets released Brady Quinn, leaving rookie starter Geno Smith and backup Matt Simms as the team's only healthy quarterbacks for the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The move Saturday had been expected because coach Rex Ryan prefers to not have three quarterbacks active for games — and it prevents Quinn's salary from being guaranteed. Salaries for NFL veterans became guaranteed at 4 p.m. EDT Saturday.
Quinn was signed by the Jets on Monday to provide a veteran presence at the position with Mark Sanchez sidelined with a shoulder injury. It's very likely the Jets will re-sign Quinn early this week.
Linebacker Danny Lansanah, who had an outstanding training camp, was promoted from the practice squad. He last played in a regular-season NFL game in 2009.
Bruno Mars to play Super Bowl halftime
Grammy-winner Bruno Mars will sing at halftime of the Super Bowl in February, a person familiar with the NFL's entertainment plans told The Associated Press on Saturday.
The official word is expected to come at an event in New York's Times Square on Sunday.
The Super Bowl will be played Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Halftime shows have drawn more than 100 million television viewers in the United States alone in past years.
Beyonce was the star of this year's Super Bowl halftime show in February in New Orleans.
Some recent halftime performers at the NFL's championship game were Madonna in 2012, The Black Eyed Peas with Usher and Slash in 2011, The Who in 2010, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in 2009.
Mars is one of pop music's top acts, with several No. 1 hits, including his most recent, "When I Was Your Man."

Patriots • New England re-signed running back-kick returner Leon Washington and signed offensive lineman Josh Kline to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on Saturday. A seven-year veteran, Washington shares the NFL record with Josh Cribbs with eight career kickoff returns for touchdowns.
Chargers • Rookie linebacker Manti Te'o has been ruled out of Monday night's opener against the Houston Texans with what the team has called a sprained right foot. Te'o hasn't practice since hurting his foot in the exhibition opener against Seattle on Aug. 8. —
