The NBA will install motion-tracking cameras in every arena this season. The cameras will monitor player movement and help teams and players get even more detailed analysis of the action on the court.
It's the next step in a partnership between the league and STATS that began in 2009. The SportVU cameras were used in Orlando during the NBA Finals. The cameras track everything from a player's physical exertion to the field goal percentage he holds his opponent to while guarding him. It can also be used to evaluate referees.
The NBA is the first U.S. professional sports league to use this type of technology to quantify player movement. STATS is owned jointly by The Associated Press and 21st Century Fox.
