QB Griffin to start Redskins' opener

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan made official what had long been expected, naming Robert Griffin III his starter for Washington's Week 1 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Griffin received clearance from orthopedic surgeon James Andrews on Thursday evening to play in the season opener, but Shanahan declined at the time to declare the second-year quarterback his starter because he said Andrews told him there were "a couple of concerns that he had" and that he needed to talk with Griffin over the weekend first.

Griffin has cleared every hurdle he has faced during his recovery and has practiced without limitation for the last two weeks but did not appear in any preseason games.

Around league

Jets • New York signed quarterback Brady Quinn on Monday to give them an experienced backup behind rookie Geno Smith, who appears likely to start the season opener against Tampa Bay on Sunday. Quinn, a first-round draft pick of Cleveland in 2007, was cut by Seattle on Saturday. Mark Sanchez is sidelined with a shoulder injury and could miss at least the first few weeks of the season.

Broncos • Cornerback Champ Bailey didn't practice Monday and said his status for Thursday night's opener against Baltimore was "still up in the air." Bailey has been out since spraining his left foot Aug. 17 in a preseason game at Seattle.

Packers • Green Bay signed QB Seneca Wallace just days after he was released by San Francisco, the Packers' opening-game opponent. Wallace replaces B.J. Coleman as the backup for Aaron Rodgers. Coleman was released Monday. Wallace left the 49ers last week and San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said the quarterback was "not going to continue to play football." After his first Packers practice Monday, Wallace said there was a "miscommunication" with the 49ers.

Giants • Receiver Victor Cruz practiced with the team for the first time since bruising his left heel in a preseason game against the Colts on Aug. 18, and appears ready to play Sunday night against Dallas.

NFL notes • Jets sign veteran Quinn with Sanchez still out.
