The big news out of BYU on Monday — other than the announcement of a two-game football series with Cal — was the naming of four captains whose last names were not Hoffman, Van Noy or Hill. Here's more on that surprise announcement that JD Falslev, Skyler Ridley, Daniel Sorensen and Uani Unga were voted captains by their teammates. Also, here's my notebook, which is mostly about Virginia coach Mike London's press conference Monday, and how he raved about Kyle Van Noy. Get the details on the Cal-BYU series — 2014 in Berkeley, 2017 in Provo — there. Speaking of the captains, it was cool to hear Falslev talk about what it meant to him to be named a captain. "It is very, very humbling. It is probably one of the greatest achievements of my football career, from high school or college. It is a really, really cool deal to be elected a captain by your peers, from the guys you have worked with for so long, guys that you have grinded with all summer long," Falslev said. "For me, it has been for four years. It is very humbling. I am excited to help lead this team through the toughest schedule we have ever had. So I am just looking forward to getting to work with the guys even more than I have been." Senior running back Mike Alisa had nothing but good to say about the offensive captains who were picked, Falslev and Ridley. "I don't think you could pick a better set of guys than [JD Falslev and Skyler Ridley]. Those guys are walk-ons, and they are all heart. And that's the kind of an attitude that we need as a Cougar offense. Skyler has one of my favorite stories, because he came on the scene late last year and he only played that game, I think, because Dalin Tollestrup got injured during warmups. And he made the first touchdown of the season last year," Alisa said. "His jump onto the scene was like a flame finding some gasoline. It was just really fun to watch, and JD Falslev is another guy who just fights. You saw that in the Utah game. The kick was blocked, the crowd starts rushing the field, JD grabs the ball and starts running around and gives us another chance to kick the ball. So both those guys are the types of guys who are all heart and inspire those around them. So we couldn't have a better pair of guys than those two." Taysom Hill also gave the picks his stamp of approval. "I don't think, like when we go to vote for captains, I am not saying, 'Hey, Skyler is a walk on. I am going to vote for him, or I am not going to vote for him.' I think the fact that they were walk-ons shows that they've worked hard," Hill said. "And they earned what they have. And so I think guys respect them because they weren't just given scholarships. They walked on, they worked hard, and they had to earn it. And I think that's probably what shows how they were elected captains."
