Park City • The final whistle was equal parts disappointment and relief after 100 minutes Tuesday.

The Park City Miners, last year's Class 3A state runner-ups in girls' soccer, shuffled off the field after the 1-1 tie. The Bountiful Braves, on the other hand, were relieved to survive the barrage of shots and hard tackles the Miners administered.

"They are a really physical team," Bountiful forward Sophia Skedros said. "We lost so many seniors last year that it was good to know we could play with anyone."

Park City came out swinging in the first half, unloading nine shots on goal. With senior striker Jesse Dancy leading the charge, the Miners were held scoreless on the strength of Bountiful's back line and the acrobatics of goalkeeper Charity Cole.

"My defenders played really well today," Cole said. "They totally saved it. After a game like this, you know that I can trust them to make big plays."

Park City finally struck in the 72nd minute when Dancy crossed a ball to the far right post. Reese Pearson was able to knee the ball in for the score.

"I know those goals are going to happen," Cole said. "You just have to reset and focus on making the next stop."

Cole didn't have to wait long when Miranda Tesch cornered a ball in the 77th minute. It was misplayed by a Miner fullback, and Skedros was able to head the ball in for the tying goal.

"Getting tackled by my teammates was the best feeling," Skedros said about her first varsity goal. "Things were getting close at the end. I'm just glad I was in the right position."

Overtime showcased Cole's ability to explode outside of the box to make stops and use her foot to punt the ball to midfield to restart the offense. She was challenged twice by Dancy's powerful leg but managed to make diving stops to hold on for the tie.

"It's good to get the first one done," Cole said. "We're looking pretty good moving forward." —
