Cleveland • Browns running back Trent Richardson will not play in the exhibition opener against St. Louis as he continues to recover from a shin injury.

Richardson was kicked in the shin last week in practice and was sidelined for two days. Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said the team is being cautious with Richardson, who could have played if it was a regular-season game. Chudzinski said he is not concerned about Richardson's durability.

The first-round draft pick in 2012 played most of his rookie season with two broken ribs and still rushed for 950 yards.

Chudzinski said Dion Lewis will start in Richardson's spot. Also, starting safety T.J. Ward will sit out with a hamstring injury.
