NFL notes: Austin Collie signs with 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers signed receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins to one-year deals Friday after both veteran free agents worked out for the team earlier in the day.
The 49ers made the moves to help bolster a receiver unit that has been decimated by injuries. San Francisco began training camp last week without top wideout Michael Crabtree out for at least half the season after tearing his Achilles tendon in May and three other receivers have missed time this week.
Collie, from BYU, played the past four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, but appeared in only one game last year due to injury. He had 173 receptions during his first three seasons with the Colts.
Hawkins was released by New England on Wednesday after playing five seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Hawkins had 47 receptions for the Titans in 2011 and 71 overall with Tennessee.
Hall to induct seven
The Pro Football Hall of Fame will induct seven new members Saturday in Canton, Ohio, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The class consists of former Vikings receiver Cris Carter, Ravens lineman Jonathan Ogden, Dallas lineman Larry Allen, coach Bill Parcells, Buccaneers defensive lineman Warren Sapp, Packers linebacker Dave Robinson and Chiefs pass rusher Curley Culp.
Around the league
Eagles • Philadelphia excused Riley Cooper from all team activities on Friday as the receiver deals with repercussions of being caught on video making a racial slur. Cooper apologized profusely Wednesday after a video of him using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert last month surfaced on the Internet.
Raiders • Oakland signed kicker Sebastian Janikowski to a four-year extension Friday, locking up the franchise's leading scorer through 2017.
Niners • Cornerback Chris Culliver will miss the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Culliver was injured Thursday during a noncontact drill. Culliver was San Francisco's third cornerback the past two seasons.
