While it's one thing to be a first-time coach at an existing program, it's an entirely different thing to be a first time coach while starting a program from scratch.
But that's the task ahead for Don Eck and the brand new Corner Canyon Chargers.
While Eck may be new to high school coaching, the former University of Utah offensive lineman has more than two decades of coaching experience in college, NFL Europe and the United Football League. But he's facing challenges that he's never had to face before.
"There's been a million growing pains already, just figuring out where we're going to work out," Eck said.
With construction often keeping the team off the field and out of the weight room until August, the team has been at the mercy of other high schools. The Chargers have used the facilities at Jordan, Hillcrest and Alta in preparation for their inaugural season.
While the school, facilities and field may be brand new, many of the players on this Chargers team are seasoned veterans. Corner Canyon will feature players who took the field for Juan Diego, Summit Academy, Jordan and Alta last season.
One of the players that Eck is most excited about is former Alta lineman Jake Hatfield, a senior who will be a key anchor on the Chargers' offensive line.
Other former Alta players that will feature prominently in Corner Canyon's offense are quarterback Michael Ebeling and running back Riley Ogden.
Corner Canyon Chargers
ASSIGNMENT • Region 7
LAST YEAR • New school
KEY RETURNER • Jake Hatfield, sr., OL. Hatfield only recently decided to make the move from Alta to Corner Canyon. He will be an important offensive lineman for the Chargers.
PLAYER TO WATCH • Michael Ebeling, jr., QB. The Alta transfer got just a few snaps at quarterback last year but will be the starter for the Chargers.
BIGGEST HOLE • Facilities. While construction is ongoing at the school, access to facilities is limited. Even the most basic tasks like issuing equipment are made difficult and cut into practice and preparation time for the team.
NEED TO KNOW • Due to the high rate of players coming from Alta, the Chargers use much of the same terminology on offense. They'll run a pro-style offense with multiple formations and will try to run and pass equally.
