Prep football two-a-days: Stansbury
It wasn't how Stansbury wanted to finish the season.
After finishing 6-0 in region, the Stallions fell short to eventual Class 3A state champions Dixie 20-13 in the second round. Stansbury, a juggernaut on both sides of the ball throughout the season, is ready to shove out of the way-early exits in the playoffs.
"They put in the work and use losses as motivation to get past the setbacks," Stansbury coach Clint Christensen said. "We've had a great camp this summer, and the kids have been working really hard."
Stansbury is ready to tackle a challenging season with Utah State commit Chase Christensen running a flexbone triple offense and Utah commit Allan Havili clogging up the line defensively. With Austin Kincaid and Tyler Jensen and 14 returning players, Christensen thinks the maturity and explosiveness of his team will be the difference.
"We've got so many strong players coming back," coach Christensen said. "We've come out short the last two years, and we'd like to get over that hurdle."
Christensen believes that the work they've done during camp has strengthened the offensive line giving his son, Chase, a chance to properly execute the offense.
"Chase is the most dynamic player on the team," coach Christensen said. "An explosive athlete, he knows how to run the option. Moreover, at linebacker, he makes a lot of tackles."
Stansbury opens its season in Southern Utah against Desert Hills. The Stallions' coach said that it could be a preview of the state championship game.
ASSIGNMENT • 3AA North
LAST YEAR • 11-1 overall, 6-0 Region 11
KEY RETURNER • Quarterback Chase Christensen. The 6-foot-2 Utah State commit runs a flexbone triple option and is a threat at linebacker for the Stallions.
PLAYER TO WATCH • Defensive lineman Allan Havili. His dominance at the line often requires double or triple teams to stop him. He is committed to Utah.
BIGGEST HOLE • The offensive line needs to give Christensen time and room to make plays.
NEED TO KNOW • Purposely scheduled tough games to prepare for postseason. Their first game is against Desert Hills.
